Acropolis Café Bar & Grill
A moment’s walk from Port Nikau, two things are guaranteed at Acropolis – an amazing meal and stunning views to match. Since opening in mid-2023, the relaxed authentic Greek eatery has become a firm local favourite. Alongside traditional meze hot and cold starters, try the delicious baked feta dip (bouyourdi) and the never-to-be-forgotten calamari.
Parua Bay Tavern
With beautiful views, a waterside lawn and outdoor decks, Parua Bay Tavern boasts a dynamic seasonal menu. Lucky diners may get a visit from the orcas and dolphins swimming among the boats. The kitchen closes at 8:30pm each evening, so book ahead if possible. A jetty is available to tie up to if you are arriving by boat.
Marina Woodfired Dining
Northland’s pizza game is strong and for pizza with a coastal twist, check out the Marina Woodfired Dining overlooking Tutukaka Marina. Open from 7am for coffee and pastries before the woodfired ovens are cranked up from 3pm.
Schnappa Rock
About 40 minutes northeast of Whangārei is the lovely Tutukaka Marina, home to Schnappa Rock. Supporting local, seafood is a speciality – fresh-caught fish and Paroa Bay Oysters are popular. In a hurry? Takeaway options are available.
McLeod’s Pizza Barn & Brewery
For delicious pizza and award-winning beer brewed onsite head to McLeod’s Pizza Barn in beautiful Waipu. Packed with history and proud of its Scottish roots, burgers and classics abound at this popular venue. The Wharfinger pizza is a fave!
The Cove
Just one minute’s walk from Waipu Cove with beautiful views across to Whangārei Heads is the multi-award-winning, The Cove. The crew are super friendly, ensuring a warm welcome and relaxed dining. Things get busy in the summer so book ahead.
The Quay
Right in the heart of Whangārei’s Town Basin, The Quay holds almost legendary status in the region, with spectacular views from the intimate deck and veranda. Priding itself on utilising locally sourced food and drink, check out the fish of the day and the exceptional pizzas, and a great range of kids’ options.
No.8
The Town Basin’s No.8 offers authentic modern Asian flavours using locally sourced meat, seafood and produce. The twice-cooked pork belly is a highlight with locals, and for a few fork-fulls of decadence, try the magnificent truffle egg-fried rice. Keen to make a night of it? No. 8 boasts an impressive range of wines, beers and cocktails.
Loco
At the bustling Town Basin located right on the Whangārei Quayside, you’ll find a year-round summer vibe, a warm welcome and delicious South American-inspired tapas. Loco’s delicious signature and frozen cocktails are a hit. The DJ set on Friday evenings attracts Whangārei’s party goers and there’s Salsa on Sundays. Open ‘til late.
Aqua
Aqua is nestled within the amazing Hundertwasser Art Centre and subtly blends fun and contemporary with its unique décor and innovative menu. Jovial Judge Tavern
With a history dating back to 1891, the Jovial Judge Tavern is a friendly pub where you find great ale, sports on big screens and a tasty good-value meal. This is the place in town to hear tall yarns from friendly locals grabbing a pint after work, with the occasional live band on a Saturday night.
Dickens Inn
Experience the charm of the Dickens Inn, a cosy, family-friendly English-style pub offering traditional fare in a quaint, welcoming setting. Burgers and gourmet pizzas are a delight, as is a coveted seat by the fire. Tuesday night is quiz night and summer lunchtimes can get busy. If you’re lucky, you might spot The Dickens Inn ghost!
Split Bar & Restaurant
Split in Rathbone Street offers a cosy, contemporary dining experience in a relaxed atmosphere. Well-stocked with New Zealand wines and beers, ask the friendly team about the pan-fried fish of the day, while the BBQ chicken comes highly recommended. Summer evenings are a great time to grab a cocktail in the garden.
The Butter Factory
Located in a gorgeous century-old stone building, The Butter Factory has great food and a good range of craft beers and New Zealand wines. Renowned for its award-winning atmosphere, with live music and comedy nights, there’s always lots happening. Taco Tuesday and Big Burger Thursday are great value.
Astroboy
With a menu where East meets West, great tunes and a busy bar, Astroboy appeals to a younger crowd. There are cocktails, craft beer on tap, a cool karaoke room, Happy Hour Fridays, and weekday meal deals. The weekend bottomless brunch is always a popular choice!
Jimmy Jacks
Serving up finger-licking smoked ribs, steaks, seafood and burgers, Jimmy Jacks is a popular and lively hangout. The theatrical sizzling stone grill table experience is great fun and it’s all backed up by a fine selection of starters, fresh bread, salads, desserts, and craft beers. Groups of six or more should book.
