Best Known Surf Beaches in Whangārei
There are many surf beaches around Whangārei, in close proximity to Port Nikau. If you’re just learning or already a seasoned surfer, we have the best local spots for you to visit!
Ocean Beach
Distance from Port Nikau: 37kms
Best conditions: E-NE swell combined with an offshore wind direction from the W
Walk the length of the kilometre-long beach, where you’ll discover sand dunes, rock pools, and a lookout with a memorial commemorating HMS Puriri—the only WW2 navy ship lost to enemy action in New Zea and waters. For surfers, the break at left and right beach and reef is best enjoyed at mid-tide.
Sandy Bay
Distance from Port Nikau: 39kms
Best conditions: E-NE swell combined with an offshore wind direction from the W-SW
This beach offers a variety of surf conditions for beginners and more experienced surfers, but watch out for dangerous rips. The break at right beach is best at high tide when rising. For a slower pace, you can usually find smaller swells at nearby Woolleys Bay and Matapouri.
Pataua
Distance from Port Nikau: 35kms Pataua South, 27kms Pataua North
Best conditions: NE swell combined with an offshore wind direction from the SW
A 2.4km stretch of white sand that’s good for beginners and less experienced surfers, with a locally loved break at Point, best enjoyed at any tide. Strong rips can form, so always swim between the f ags and follow lifeguards’ instructions during the summer months. The Pataua tidal estuary is a safe swimming area popular with families. Head to Pataua North or drive to Pataua South, and cross the estuary via the footbridge.
Waipu Cove
Distance from Port Nikau: 51 kms
Best conditions: NE swell combined with an offshore wind direction from the SW
This beach has it all—a beautiful stretch of white sand, toilets, a campsite, coastal walks, and nearby cafés and restaurants. The break at left and right Beach is best at mid-tide when rising. The Cove Restaurant and takeaways, overlooking the beach, is the perfect spot for a post-surf meal and drink.
Langs Beach
Distance from Port Nikau: 55kms
Best conditions: NE swell combined with an offshore wind direction from the S
Further along the coast from Waipu Cove, this pohutukawa-lined beach offers consistent surf and good fishing. The break at left and right beach is best at mid-tide when falling. It’s popu ar with locals and holidaying Auck anders, so be warned that it can get busy in the summer. At low tide, you can access the hidden Ding Bay.
