Whangārei’s Port Nikau Marina Expansion Benefits All

The Port Nikau Marina is expanding as the construction of the latest pier is scheduled for completion in late February.

Port Nikau Marina Manager Blair Smeal says he is looking forward to helping solve the mass shortage of berths in Whangārei by creating spaces for 24 additional vessels. “Increasing the number of berths available will also support the local Port Nikau-based boatyards and tradespeople with more refit and maintenance work. It is a win-win for both vessel owners and local contractors.”

The opening of this pier marks another milestone in the development and growth of the wider Port Nikau Development Plan.

The Port Nikau Marina features modern floating pontoons to ensure ease of entry and exit from vessels, locked gates and modern shore-based facilities.

Local contractors have been working hard to get the pier built, ready to provide berthage for locals and visitors alike.

“Total Marine has project-managed the design and installation, Busck Prestressed Concrete LTD have built the pontoons, BDX Group has made the aluminium gangway, Cliffs Industrial Electrical have done the wiring of the telecare pedestals, and Advanced Security have connected our secure entryways and keypads. It’s great to work with such talented local companies,” says Blair.

The main reason people love berthing at Port Nikau is the location, says Blair. Port Nikau Marina is accessible to town (a five-minute drive away) and close to the harbour entrance.

“Port Nikau Marina is really handy to the harbour entrance, which allows boat owners to either spend time in the harbour or travel out for a sail or deep water fishing and still get back in time for dinner.”

A limited number of berths are available now. Blair encourages anyone interested to visit the Port Nikau Marina so he can show you around, or find out more information on our website.

“We love meeting new people, local and overseas, and welcoming them to Port Nikau. The waters around Whangārei are incredible and it’s such a beautiful part of New Zealand. We’re privileged to be able to share this with the vessel owners that berth with us,” says Blair.
